Why is my Video Game postmodern?
Postmodernism is a set of ideas used to describe the state in which we live in and postmodern media reflects these ideas. Unlike modernism which searched for a truth and meaning. Postmodernism contradicts aspects of modernism and is a reaction to modernism. I will explore contemporary media texts that I think are dominantly postmodern such as Grand Theft Auto that involve elements of both postmodernism and modernism. Also briefly discussing more recent postmodern texts such as games like Call of Duty 3 in which Jean Francis Lytard focused on the historical approach of postmodernism, he claims that 'postmodernism is incredulity towards grand narratives'. Lyotard believed that modern structures are collapsed and concluded how our present society has lack of belief in progression. Modernism contradicts this as the modernist period involved heavy belief in progression, science and religion allowing people to have more trust in society. In addition to Lyotards theory Fredric Jameson introduced "cultural recycling". This is the process that in post modernity we fail to produce anything new or original therefore this leads to the recycling of past ideas and recreating them is out only outlet for progression.
